Breaking into the industry!!

Can anyone advise me of the best way to get into the industry?? I,ve been trying for almost 2 years but to no avail as yet!!
Interested in Observer / Navigator jobs.
Good mechanical / electrical / computers background but unfortunately no formal qualifications.

There has to be a way in for me?

Pretty much all the major companies are taking on people at the moment, due to the huge increase in new builds and conversions. The down side of this being that the industry is due for its next crash.........probably next year

I am on a PGS vessel at the moment with two navigator trainees with no experience whatsover....albeit one with a basic land surveying background.

I know that Seabird are desperately looking for people, and can confirm that they are employing trainees.....

Bear in mind that the nature of the selection process is usually deemed by if there is a position to fill at the time, and your CV happens to be on the desk. You might get a letter saying you are on file, but more realistically your CV is 'filed' in the trash. Try, try and try again....

Many thanks for the reply Mark, I did have an interview with PGS as a trainee navigator, they offered me the job, but when it came to sorting the contract with head office they made the excuse that they couldn't employ me because i don't have a degree!!

Thnks for the advice - I will just keep on sending my CV to all of the companies and see if something turns up!

I just heard this as well, that people were rejected after being accepted for jobs, based on what degree they had

I also heard that people were offered jobs, accepted them, then un-accepted them and went to Fugro-Geoteam

I finally been offered a position as a Trainee Navigator with a company called RXT - they seem to be really good & down to earth!! Anyone ever worked for them or had any dealings with them???

I have not heard any negative feedback about RXT.....

Try to avoid the Chouest boat if you can.....

Just been reading your responses to this question. I note this was written a few years ago and was wondering if you know of any companies currently taking on Trainee Navigators. I've sent my CV out to every company I can find - But had no joy at the moment. Any help and advice would be greatly received.

I have a degree in an unrelated subject and a masters degree in IT and I have some land surveying experience.

Any advice would be great.

I have been trying to gain employment in the seismic industry as a trainee Navigator or Observer for some time now and having no luck. Finding it difficult to get responses from my applications and 'follow-up' emails.

Reading your post on Horizon Exploration I note you eventually found work at RXT. Please can you give me any advice on how you gained employment as a Trainee Navigator. Incidently, I have applied for a Trainee Navigator position with RXT some time ago and written emails to two different people in the HR department to find out if my application was of interest - if not, just a short email reply for my feedback. I received an email from one of the people stating they will be reviewing the applications in the next two weeks. This was over six weeks ago. I have since written to gain some feedback. I'm yet to hear anything.

I'm not sure if I am being too pushy or not pushy enough. - Any help and advice would be very appreciated.

If your really desperate try Fairfield Nodal

The trouble with seismic is that it just depends at what time your CV hits the desk... if they need to fill a slot and your CV has just come in you have a good chance of getting a call back. If not your CV is filed.. (in the bin presumably)...

You could always try Dolphin too...

Apologies, I seem to have nuked your user too! I managed to pick up 75+ new bogus users in the last couple of weeks and pruned them all... sorry about that..

Many thanks for the response and the advice. I'd sent my CV to Dolphin but not Fairfield, not sure why, thought I'd covered them all? So just sent it over to them.

I've been trying on and off to crack into the industry for some years now but had no luck. I've started to push the HR people for a response and feedback to my applications and got one this morning from RXT explaining the high level of applications and high level of qualifications of the candidates was the reason I didn't get through the initial screening. Had hoped that one might come through.

Thanks again for the advice - Will keep plugging away and researching different routes in. Hopefully my CV will land in the right place at the right time.
